EVEREST BASE CAMP

The most popular Everest Base Camp Trek and the trekkers’ paradise is the south base camp which is situated at a height of 5, 364 meters (17,598 feet) and a distance of 60 kilometers from the nearest Lukla airport. It usually takes 9 days to reach Everest base camp from Lukla with proper acclimatization. Current Everest base camp is a rugged place situated on the Khumbu glacier and quite close to Khumbu icefall covered with moraines. It is surrounded by big mountains like Pumori (7,161 meters, 23,494 feet), Lingtren (6,749 meters, 22,142 feet), Khumbutse (6,636 meters, 21,772 feet), Lho La (6,006 meters, 19,704 feet) and Nuptse (7,861 meters, 25,791 feet). Mount Everest is not visible from Base camp but you can see it on the way to base camp once you get down to Khumbu glacier then it is not visible as other big mountains are situated before it. You can see a magnificent view of Mount Everest during your hike to Kala Patthar – 5, 645 meters.

The Everest base camp is not a fixed place it is kept on moving here and there as the glacier moves, it says while the timing of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first Everest summit the Base camp was near Thukla. Now it is close to Khumbu Icefall even you can touch the small wall of Icefall after 100 meters from the current Base camp. The trail to Everest base camp is completely moraine and always moving here and there so you cannot find a permanent trail to the Everest base camp. Someone needs to be careful on the way to Base Camp especially when you are on the Khumbu glacier, sometimes you need to jump from cracked solid ice and might need to walk on slippery ice. Though it covers with moraines when a glacier moves the moraine cover gets cleared and this creates a problem to cross such parts.
You can also see Lhotse the 5th biggest, and Makalu the 6th biggest mountain during the Everest Base Camp Trek apart from Everest.
